2010 FIFA World Cup Tournament in South Africa

  • 12/04/2009: Group G is considered the “Group of Death” with strong records from Brazil, Portugal, and rising power Ivory Coast. The 1st and 2nd from each group and 3rd and 4th teams will play each other first. A schedule can be found here.
  • 11/20/2009: The FIFA has decided that a rematch between France and Ireland will not be played and France will continue on the the 2010 World Cup. FIFA says that official rules clearly state that the decision of a referee is final and cannot be overturned after a game, CNN.
  • 11/19/2009: Controversy has erupted over the qualifying match between France and Ireland for a spot at the 2010 World Cup. France won the match after a handball helped the team score a goal in the final seconds. The referee did not call the handball and the score was allowed to stand, sending France to the World Cup, Associated Press.  Calls have been made in recent years for football to add an instant replay option on close calls, but the current organizer of the 2010 World Cup opposes the practice, USA Today. The World Cup will be held in South Africa next year, FIFA official website.
