Germany’s Top Soldier Resigns over Civilians Deaths

Wolfgang Schneiderhan, Germany’s top soldier in Afghanistan, has resigned due to allegations of a cover-up of the events of September 4 in which a fuel truck that has been stolen by militants was blown up by a NATO airstrike under the command of the German military. Many civilians were also killed in the attack, although reports range from between 30 to 70 civilian deaths. Schneiderhan resigned because he was allegedly involved in a cover-up in which the German military at first insisted that no civilians had been killed, BBC News.

Today marks the first anniversary of the terrorist attacks that killed 166 people in Mumbai, India. Mumbai is marking the day with vigils and commemorations, Associated Press.  More on the 26/11 memorials, Times of India.

A new report says that the Catholic Church in Ireland covered up child abuse by priests.  The government-produced report looked at allegations against 46 priests from 1975-2004, Associated Press.

The website Wikileaks has posted half a million text messages that it says are from September 11th, 2001, CNN.

The U.N. has called for more effort to eliminate violence against women, Xinhua.

9/11 Mastermind to be Tried in New York

The alleged mastermind of the September 11th attacks, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, will be tried for his crimes in New York City. Mohammed, Walid bin Attash, Ali Abdul Aziz Ali, Mustafa Ahmed al-Hawsawi, and Ramzi Bin al-Shib will be tried by the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. 5 other detainees at the Guantanamo Bay prison (Omar Khadr, Mohammed Kamin, Ibrahim al Qosi, Noor Uthman Muhammed and Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri) will be tried by a military commission, CNN. In Canada, the Supreme Court is hearing an appeal by the government that seeks to remove an order by a lower court that Canada must do everything possible to bring Omar Khadr back to Canada. Khadr is a  Canadian citizen who was captured as a child soldier in Afghanistan when he was just 15 years old. He has been held in Guantanamo for the past 8 years, Toronto Star.  Watch the hearing live on C-SPAN2.

The U.S. seized a New York City skyscraper and 4 mosques suspected of illegally funneling money to Iran today. The buildings were under the control of an Iranian foundation that was set up during the reign of the Shah of Iran. After a coup displaced the Shah in 1979, the members of the foundation were replaced with supporters of the current government, ABC News.  The U.S. also renewed financial sanctions against Iran yesterday, Reuters.

September 11, 2001 Remembered

Today is the 8th anniversary of what is now known as the “September 11th” attacks in which extremists connected to al Qaeda crashed hijacked airplanes into the World Trade Center towers in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. A third plane was hijacked but passengers were able to over take the hijackers before it reached its intended target. The plane crashed in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Memorials are taking place today at all three sites. Vice President Joe Biden will be in New York City at the World Trade Center site and President Barack Obama will be at the Pentagon memorial, Associated Press. Life after 9/11, New York Times. Taiwan’s former President Chen Shui-bian has been sentenced to life in prison on charges of fraud and embezzlement, New York Times.

Riots have continued for a second day the Ugandan capital of Kampala. Supporters of one of the regions ethnic kings have clashed with police backed the military and the central government, Al Jazeera.

Details are surfacing about the whereabouts of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who was out of public view on Monday. Sources now say Netanyahu was in Russia possibly meeting with Vladamir Putin concerning the cargo ship Arctic Sea that disappeared last month for several weeks. The ship may have been carrying missiles to Iran, BBC News.
