US President Barack Obama Awarded 2009 Nobel Peace Prize

The 2009 Nobel Peace  Prize has been awarded to U.S. President Barack Obama. The announcement came as a surprise to many as Obama is only nine months into his four-year term in office. Obama’s work to reduce nuclear arsenals and his outreach to the Muslim world are included among his “extraordinary” diplomatic efforts, the committee judges said, Reuters. A car bombing in Peshawar, a city in northwestern Pakistan near the Afghan border, has killed at least 50. As Pakistan’s army prepares for renewed battle against the Taliban in South Waziristan, attacks are expected to increase, Bloomberg.

A woman who became famous for her stance supporting 2nd Amendment rights by bringing a loaded gun to her daughter’s soccer game in Lebanon, Pennsylvania on September 11, 2008 has been found shot in her home, along with her husband, in a suspected shootout. The couple’s three children fled the house when the shooting started and are safe, CNN.

26 are dead in the latest mining accident in China. Two elevators failed at a tin ore mine in central China. China has the most dangerous mines in the world, Associated Press.

10 U.S. Banks to Begin Paying Back Bailout Money

As we reported earlier, 11 people have been killed in a suicide bombing in Peshawar, Pakistan at the Pearl Continental Hotel, a 5-star hotel frequently used by foreigners. Three suicide attackers in possibly two cars gunned down security and then ran their car into the hotel. At least 52 people were wounded, and one person killed was a U.N. worker, BBC News.

10 U.S. banks are now allowed to begin paying back the government the bailout money they accepted to stay afloat. Among the big banks, JPMorgan Chase and Goldman Sachs will help pay back almost $70B dollars. Others banks include American Express, Bank of New York Mellon, the BB&T Corporation, Capital One Financial, the State Street Corporation U.S. Bancorp, and Morgan Stanley, New York Times.

The clinic of Dr. George Tiller, the man shot and killed last week by a pro-life advocate, will be permanently closed, his family says. The clinic, which performed abortions for decades, was often the site of protests, USA Today.

Iraq has freed a man who was charged with the murders of five U.S. soldiers. Rumore have circulated that he was released as an act of good will to militant groups who released a group of British hostages. Laith al-Khazali was accused of helping kill Capt. Brian S. Freeman, 31, of Temecula, California; 1st Lt. Jacob N. Fritz, 25, of Verdon, Nebraska; Spc. Johnathan B. Chism, 22, of Gonzales, Louisiana; Pfc. Shawn P. Falter, 25, of Cortland, New York; and Pfc. Johnathon M. Millican, 20, of Trafford, Alabama, CNN.

Breaking: Bomb Blast at 5-Star Hotel in Pakistan

A car bomb has killed at least 11 and injured more than 50 in Peshawar, Pakistan at a 5-star hotel popular with foreigners. Reports say a Pakistani state minister has been injured as well as two U.N. workers. The blast occurred in the hotel parking lot and destroyed dozens of cars. The Pearl Continental Hotel has been evacuated and there are some reports that gunmen tried to storm the hotel, but more information is not known on the gunmen.
