The driver who killed 5 people yesterday in Apeldoorn, Holland has died. The man’s name has not yet been released, CNN. Update: BNO confirms a sixth person has died from injuries sustained during yesterday’s crash.
Worldwide, workers are marching on this May Day to protest how their governments have handled the economic crisis. Violence has already erupted in Germany and Turkey. In Germany, at least 12 were arrested and around 30 injured when protesters clashed with police. Tear gas was fired in Istanbul and a “large number” were arrested. At least 300 rallies are expected in France alone and dozens of other countries are set to participate. We’ll update as the protests go on, BBC News.
In some happy sports news (unless you’re a Celtics fan), the Chicago Bulls took the Boston Celtics to triple overtime in last night’s 128-127 win in game 6 of the NBA playoffs, evening the series. Celtics’ player Ray Allen scored 51 points, the second highest number of playoff points in a single game in Celtics history, but Rookie of the Year Derrick Rose’s block in the final seconds cemented the Bulls win. Reports have emerged that Professor George Zinkhan’s wife, whom he killed last Saturday along with two others in Athens, GA, wanted a divorce. The UGA professor is still on the loose and the authorities have admitted that they have no leads on where he has gone, although some police believe he has committed suicide, AJC.
A 72-year-old California man who was arrested earlier this month is being called the most prolific serial killer in Los Angeles’ history. John Floyd Thomas, an insurance claims adjuster, is believe to have raped and murdered 30 elderly women in the span of three decades, AP.
The death toll from the attack at the Apeldoorn Queen’s Day celebrations has risen to five. A driver ran drive his car at a high speed into a crowd of people, extremely close to a bus carrying the royal family, before crashing into a monument. The driver has life-threatening injuries. but reports did say before he went into surgery he admitted to trying to attack the royal family, Sky News.
Activist women in Kenya have imposed a week-long sex ban on their husbands and partners in response to infighting within the government. The group are also thinking of paying prostitutes to join the ban, BBC News.
According to NPR sources, Supreme Court Justice David Souter will retire in June. Justice Souter has served more than 18 years in the high court and has been a moderate-to-liberal voice during his appointment. He most likely waited to retire during President Obama’s tenure to allow for a likeminded justice to be picked by the president, NPR.
A Citizen’s Daily Brief reader reports that five now are dead from today’s attack in Apeldoorn, Netherlands that was aimed at the Dutch royal family. The driver responsible for the attack, who drove into a crowd during a parade, was taken from the vehicle when it crashed. He is in hospital and is rumored to be brain dead.
Dutch police has officially charged the man who drove a car into a parade route, killing four and narrowly missing a bus carrying the Dutch royal family in a parade celebrating Queen Beatrix’s birthday in the town of Apeldoorn. The driver was severely injured and is in hospital. Officials have not released the driver’s name but have said he is a 38 year-old white male who has no history of mental illness and is a Dutch national. The attack was deliberate, but not an act of terrorism, Associated Press. There has been speculation that the man was estranged from his children but I have seen no official or even trustworthy unofficial reports to back that up. RTL reports that the man had lost his job. The driver was injured and has been been arrested, although he is in surgery right now and will be questioned after. He has been charged with attempting to attack the royal family. Several news agencies are now also saying that the driver confessed to crashing on purpose.
