Iran State TV Confirms Three Americans Arrested in Iran

Iran state TV has confirmed that three Americans have been arrested in Iran. The report says that the three tourists were taken into custody after accidentally crossing into the country from Iraq and that they ignored warnings from guards. The two men and one woman were hiking near the town in Ahmed Awaa, AP.

15 Colombian soldiers have been sentenced to up to 30 years in jail for killing civilians. The judge ruled that the murders had been “false positives,” or killings done to make others believe progress was being made in the battle against drug cartels and rebel groups, BBC News.

More than a 100 Iranian dissidents are on trial today on charges that they were “conspiring with foreign powers to stage a revolution through terrorism, subversion, and a media campaign to discredit last month’s presidential election.” Those charged include a former vice president and a Newsweek reporter. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will be sworn in for a second time this week, New York Times.

Shocking onlookers at the world swimming championships, Michael Phelps took back the 100-meter butterfly world record from Milorad Cavic in exciting fashion. Phelps and Cavic, who finished second, both came in under 50 seconds, the only two swimmers to ever do so. Cavic also came second to Phelps in the event at the 2008 Olympics, where Phelps won by one-hundredth of a second, ESPN.
